The London Orchard Project's mission is to develop a skilled community of Londoners to plant, care for and harvest fruit trees. We aim to create productive orchards across London, thereby significantly enhancing London’s biodiversity and its environmental quality, and increasing communities' access to the natural world.
The project was developed to help address the challenges posed by a loss in biodiversity and orchards, poor environmental quality, and lack of education about, and access to, locally produced fruit.
It is the only organisation dedicated to the rejuvenation, harvesting and growing of orchards on a London-wide scale. As such, it enjoys broad and high-level support from those promoting fruit trees and orchards for their biodiversity value. We have been approached by The Greater London Authority and The London Biodiversity Partnership to deliver on the orchards targets set out in the London Biodiversity Action Plan as the implementation partner, and our partners in the Mayor's RELEAF strategy launched in January 2011.
