Fundraising is often a neccesity when it comes to starting community based or not-for-profit orchard ventures. While the eventual aim may well be self sufficiency, funds are recquired for kick starting projects and investing in equipment. Here are some suggestions for possible fundraising options.
The Big Tree Plant
The Big Tree Plant is a campaign to encourage people and communities to plant more trees in England's towns, cities and neighbourhoods. It is a partnership bringing together national tree-planting organisations and local groups working with Defra and the Forestry Commission to plant trees throughout England. Funding is available.
The Heritage Lottery Fund
has a grant called 'Your Heritage', which offers grants from £3,000 to £50,000 for projects that relate to the local, regional or national heritage of the UK.
The Big Lottery
*NEW!* Community Wildlife Fund (UK) not for profit groups, local councils, schools and health bodys can apply for funding of between £300 and £10,000 for projects that will bring together local people to discover, enjoy or protect wildlife in their local area by improving rural or urban environments for people to enjoy, and by getting people more active and healthier. There are three deadlines for applications. The first deadline is the 21st July 2010, followed by the 22nd September and the 24th November 2010.
Local Food Fund of £50 million for projects that help make locally grown food affordable and accesible to local communities. Small grants between £2,000 and 10,000 are available as well as much larger sums. Although applications are currently suspended, you can register to receive updates for new submissions.
The Landfill Communities Fund
is a tax credit scheme that enables opertaors of landfill sites to contribute money to projects that meet environmental objectives contained in the Landfill Tax Regulations. One of the objectives of the fund is "The conservation of a specific species or a specific habitat where it naturally occurs". The key criteria for this funding is that the proposed project lies within 10 miles of a landfill site. The funds are distributed through 'Distributive Environmental Bodies'.

Lush Charity Pot Funding (UK)
Grants of a few hundred pounds to a maximum of £10,000 (although the average grant awarded is £3,000) are available for small grassroots charities, community groups and non-violent direct action groups working in the areas of environment / conservation; animal protection; and human rights. The funding is being made available through the Handemade Cosmetics Company’s Lush Charity Pot.
